Fang Girl by Helen Keeble: Guest Post & Giveaway

Hi everyone!

I have a super fun guest post and a giveaway to share with you today! We all need our fun vampire fix from time to time, don't you think? ;)

But first, some info on the book I'm talking about:

Fang Girl
by Helen Keeble

Release date: September 11th 2012
by HarperTeen
Format: Paperback, 352 pages

Goodreads:

Things That Are Destroying Jane Greene’s Undead Social Life Before It Can Even Begin:

1) A twelve-year-old brother who’s convinced she’s a zombie.

2) Parents who are begging her to turn them into vampires.

3) The pet goldfish she accidentally turns instead.

4) Weird superpowers that let her rip the heads off of every other vampire she meets.(Sounds cool, but it doesn’t win you many friends.)

5) A psychotic vampire creator who’s using her to carry out a plan for world domination.

And finally:

6) A seriously ripped vampire hunter who either wants to stake her or make out with her. Not sure which.

Being an undead, eternally pasty fifteen-year-old isn’t quite the sexy, brooding, angst-fest Jane always imagined....

Helen Keeble’s riotous debut novel combines the humor of Vladimir Tod with Ally Carter’s spot-on teen voice. With a one-of-a-kind vampire mythology and an irresistibly relatable undead heroine, this uproarious page-turner will leave readers bloodthirsty for more.

Get the book: Amazon / B & N / The Book Depository

About the author:

Helen Keeble is not, and never has been, a vampire. She has however been a teenager. She grew up partly in America and partly in England, which has left her with an unidentifiable accent and a fondness for peanut butter crackers washed down with a nice cup of tea. She now lives in West Sussex, England, with her husband, daughter, two cats, and a variable number of fish. To the best of her knowledge, none of the fish are undead.

Her first novel, a YA vampire comedy called FANG GIRL, is out 11th Sept 2012, from HarperTeen.

She also has another YA paranormal comedy novel (provisionally titled NO ANGEL) scheduled for Sept 2013.

Three Things Vampires Don't Want You To Know
Guest Post by Helen Keeble

Vampires aren't real. If they were, they couldn't stay hidden for long, right? Thanks to the endless books, films, and TV shows filled with vampiric lore, we all know how to recognise a bloodsucker. And we all know their weaknesses - sunlight, beheading, fire, stakes, athletic teenage girls, holy water, garlic…

Or maybe that's just what the vampires want you to think are their weaknesses.

Delve a little deeper into traditional vampiric folklore, and there are a lot of weird things that don't appear in our modern vampire fiction. Things that maybe the vampires want to keep quiet…

1) They're just like unicorns

No, not because vampires are also beautiful and sparkly. Because, like unicorns, vampires are terrified of virgins. In fact, while unicorns are irresistibly drawn to virgins, according to Romanian folklore virgins are irresistibly drawn to vampires.

Actually, this is true in a lot of paranormal romances too, now that I come to think of it.

Anyway, all you have to do is stick a virgin on a white (or possibly black - sources vary) horse, and they'll be able to lead you straight to the grave of the nearest vampire. And if you use a woman older than 25, she’ll even be able to kill the vampire for you as well. Just get her to whip the vampire's grave with a hazel twig, and the bloodsucker will never be able to rise again.

Basically, older female virgins are homing missiles of mass vampire destruction. No wonder literature is full of vampires desperately trying to romance young girls. They have to neutralize them!

2) They float

"Big deal," I hear you say, rolling your eyes. "Ducks float. Boats float. What's so special about vampires floating?"

Because, according to our friend Romanian folklore again, vampires always float. They literally can't sink.

Folklore boringly suggests using this trait to determine if someone is a vampire by tossing them in a river, but just think of the many other uses for this peculiar property...

"This is the captain speaking. Unfortunately we have hit an iceberg and water is now pouring through the hull, but there is no need to be alarmed! The vampires strapped under the Titanic's hull make this ship literally unsinkable. While we repair the hole, please enjoy complimentary cocktails on the aft deck, and ignore the muffled screams of the tormented undead underneath your feet."

Vampires would definitely want to keep this one quiet. No bloodsucker wants to spend eternity stuffed under an airplane chair as an emergency floatation device.

3) You're probably always carrying the means to defeat one

Check your pockets or purse. Got some spare change? Maybe a half-eaten packet of breath mints? A tissue?

Congratulations! You can stop a charging vampire in his tracks.

All you have to do is fling a handful of small objects at him, and he'll be compelled to stop in order to count them all. No, really. The technical term for this behaviour is arithmomania, and it crops up everywhere in vampire folklore, all around the globe. Poland, Romania, China, India, pretty much everywhere has legends about obsessive-compulsive vampires. Though curiously, it seems to have fallen out of favour in modern vampire fiction.

Apart, of course, from one famous case:

There you go. Incontrovertible proof that Sesame Street is written by vampire hunters, who are determined to make sure children everywhere know vampires' real weakness.

And now you do too.

P.S. Yes, I really do use one of these pieces of vampire folklore in my novel FANG GIRL. And no, I'm not going to tell you which one…

Review: What Kills Me by Wynne Channing

Happy Friday everyone!

What Kills Me

by Wynne Channing

Published: June 6th 2012
by Jet & Jack Press
Format: ebook, 209 pages

Goodreads

(The synopsis is a bit spoiler-y)

An ancient prophecy warns of a girl destined to cause the extinction of the vampire race.

So when 17-year-old Axelia falls into a sacred well filled with blood and emerges a vampire, the immortal empire believes she is this legendary destroyer. Hunted by soldiers and mercenaries, Axelia and her reluctant ally, the vampire bladesmith Lucas, must battle to survive.

How will she convince the empire that she is just an innocent teenager-turned bloodsucker and not a creature of destruction? And if she cannot, can a vampire who is afraid of bugs summon the courage to fight a nation of immortals?

My thoughts:

This book was so badass! That's the best way to describe it if you want a one-word description. Filled with wit, adventure, suspense, drama, romance, kickbutt characters, lots of twists and turns and  non-stop action, What Kills Me is a one-sit-read that keeps you on the edge of your seat and gives you a great, interesting story and awesome characters that you will definitely get attached to and want to read more and more about.

The beginning of the story may be a little misleading: we have a teenage girl who goes to Italy to study for the summer. All is nice and dreamy - beautiful setting, summery atmosphere, witty heroine trying to have some fun and a sweet romance in vacation. She even meets the perfect, handsome, gallant boy and everything seems too good to be true. Well, that's because it is - soon her dreamy adventure turns into a nightmare she can't escape.

As if someone trying to kill her wasn't bad enough, Axelia wakes up in a scary place with some weird people who claim she's now a vampire. She doesn't even get a chance to come to terms with that crazy idea and to make her escape, because suddenly some dangerous looking men barge in and take her away for being "an abomination". Her becoming a vampire was very unusual and apparently poses a danger for the entire vampire race, so she must answer to the Empress, their ruler, immediately.

She's much stronger that she realized, so she manages to escape the blood sucking soldiers the first time, but then they're always after her. And that's when the true adventure begins. Always on the run, scared, far away from her family and with no way to contact them, surviving and evading all the soldiers and mercenaries who are after her is a real struggle. But she runs into Lucas and though they don't meet under the best circumstances, he becomes the only person she can rely on. They both set out on a journey filled with tension, danger, action, unpredictable situations and thrills that will change them and get them really close to each other.

He always looked brooding and preoccupied, but I could never tell what was going through his head. I didn’t know how he was dealing with this ordeal. I chose to interpret his silence as strength. I needed something to believe in. He was all I had left.

Axelia is such a cool character! I'll admit though that she doesn't make the best first impression. I mean, you don't go out into the dark (without telling anyone where you are going), follow a stranger into a closed, creepy-looking building in a remote place just like that, and then you're surprised when said stranger wants to kill you, right? *head desk*

I should have never trusted Paolo. My entire life I had been a good, cautious person. Just this once I had wanted a little adventure—and now this. Why? Why me?

Anyway, her misjudgment was somehow necessary to get the story going. She has to learn from her mistake, to pay the consequences. Of course, she doesn't deserve all the terror and craziness her new 'life' throws at her, but she's brave, stubborn and doesn't give up even in the worst situations. She's feisty, courageous and meets the danger head on; add to that her new developed vampire skills and you get a seriously kickbutt heroine:

I expected to crash onto the pavement, the concrete scraping off patches of skin. Except that time seemed to slow while I was in mid air. Landing with one foot on the street and letting the momentum carry me forward, I put my right hand down and did a frontward flip. I stood and turned to look at the truck speeding away.

Desperate, I searched for a weapon, a distraction, and I picked up the car door. They [the mercenaries] were closing in on me. With a cry, I launched the door at them. It sailed through the air like a disk. They both leaped to avoid it, but it caught one of them in the midsection. The vampire appeared to jump over it, but just his top half flopped over and he fell to the ground in two parts. The door kept flying through the air, and a split second later embedded itself into the side of the black sedan with a crash.

Her relationship with Lucas has a rocky start (they kind of hate each other at the beginning, but they have to put up with each other to move on and survive the craziness around them), but it grows into something very special and heart-warming. It's subtle, yet intense.

“Hey,” I said, fighting to lighten my tone.
“Hmm.”
“I think that was the first time that you’ve ever called me by my name.”
“What? No.”
“Yes,” I said. “See? You do like me.”
He clucked his tongue and shook his head, but he had a faint smile on his face.

He finally glanced over at me. The left corner of his lip curled and he winked. I smiled. I loved that. It filled the emptiness inside of me. It was a flash of light in the darkness.

And their banter is so adorable and hilarious!

He didn’t respond so I started to mutter to myself. “I’m going to miss cheese. Except blue cheese. That tastes like feet.”
“You’re a vampire now,” he said. “All human food is going to taste like feet.”
“Everything?”
“Hey, schoolgirl.”
“Yes?”
“Stop talking.”
“I’m sorry,” I said. “I talk when I’m nervous or upset. My sister has diabetes so I used to tell her jokes to distract her from needles when we were kids. But even she thinks it’s annoying now.” He snapped his fingers toward the door.

“Schoolgirl?”
“Yeah?” I stopped close behind him and looked around. “What?”
“You talk too much.”
“Maybe you talk too little.”
“You’re going to live forever. Pace yourself.”

Lucas (bonus points for the name!) is ... *dreamy sigh* perfect! Loyal, caring, sweet, yet strong and with this bad boy vibe you can't resist. Not to mention his mad fighting skills. SO BADASS! Perfect book boyfriend material. ;)

He's aslo fierce, protective and very supportive:
He walked over to me and took hold of both my arms.
“Hey,” he said. “You are not a monster.”
“I’m not like you. I know,” I said.
“No. You’re not like us. You are different. But you are amazing.”
He lifted my chin with his finger. I looked up at his face, searching for sarcasm. Instead I found a softness in his expression, something I’d never seen before. Even in the dimness his emerald eyes were brilliant.

They care and depend on each other more than any of them realizes:

“If he [Lucas] wasn’t always rescuing me or fighting for me or telling me not to be a baby, I might be dead.”
“If you weren’t who you are, he might not have fought for you.”
“I just wish I could do more to protect him.”
“You are what keeps him going.” (Lucas' sire)

Of course, you can't miss the swoon worthy moments:

For a moment we looked at each other. I tried to read his eyes as they scanned my face. He parted his lips as if to speak but didn’t. I had backed him against the stove so that our stomachs were almost touching. His hands searched for a casual resting position until he rested them on his hips. A cold trickle ran down my back, and I realized at that moment that I was still in a towel.

We sank down together and bobbed up, laughing. I slung my arm around his shoulders and the side of my body was pressed against his. Beneath his soft skin his muscles were hard, like stone. Our laughter trailed away. I felt his hand on my waist. His legs brushed mine as we treaded water. I searched his face. His expression was undecipherable. He just looked into my eyes, clenched his jaw, and swallowed. I looked at his lips. They gleamed from the water, the steam. I thought he might kiss me. I wanted him to. He put his other hand on my waist...

The writing is beautiful, compelling and flows smoothly. You wouldn't even think this is the author's debut novel; everything is very well balanced. And there's no such thing as taking a break or putting the book aside for a while. You just need to keep reading, because there are lots of twists and there's always something going on; you need to know what happens next to these characters.

So, in a nutshell:
Vampires? Check!
Interesting plot? Check!
Wit, biting humor and sarcasm? Check!
Kickbutt heroine? Check!
Swoon-worthy hero? Double check!
Romance? Check!
Non-stop action? Check!
Swords play? Check! (OMG the sword fights were so freaking awesome! I think I even cheered out loud a few times.:)))

All in all, I really loved this book. And that ending? Killer! I can't wait for the sequel! I need more Lucas STAT!

P.S. How gorgeous is that cover?! *Love*

About the author:
Wynne Channing is an award-winning national newspaper reporter and young adult novelist.

She started writing horror/fantasy tales as a girl. She still has the first novel that she wrote when she was 10. It’s (unintentionally) hilarious.

Wynne loves telling stories and as a journalist, she has interviewed everyone from Daniel Radcliffe and Hugh Jackman to the president of the Maldives and Duchess Sarah Ferguson. The closest she has come to interviewing a vampire is sitting down with True Blood‘s Alexander Skarsgard (he didn’t bite).

She briefly considered calling her debut novel “Well” so then everyone would say: “Well written by Wynne Channing.” (hehe that would have been very appropriate btw)

Review: In the Shadows by Julieanne Lynch

In the Shadows
by Julieanne Lynch

Published July 20th 2011
by Strict Publishing International
Kindle Edition, 298 pages

Goodreads blurb:

"In The Shadows", the first of The Shadows trilogy, is an urban fantasy of vampires and the supernatural, and much, much more. In the shadows you will find lust and passion, battles for power and for blood, and death and fear around every corner. In the shadows you are carried away to an unknown future. Your destiny awaits, and you are no longer who you thought you were. You have a thirst, for blood perhaps, but a thirst for very much more than that.

Giselle was a normal girl with an attitude common to most girls of her age. Her family might not have been perfect (whose is?) but she loved them, and her future looked bright. She had an awesome best friend and a steady boyfriend, but how could she possibly have been so wrong about someone she loved? And how could she have been prepared for the darkness and for what she was to become?

I missed reading a new YA vampire series, so I was thrilled when I got the chance to read In the Shadows! It was a good book, with an interesting and refreshing take on the vampire lore. (Julieanne talked about it and explained all the details in our interview HERE). Her vamps are dark, creepy, unpredictable, yet intriguing and they have a fascinating history. For that reason alone, this is a book not to be missed!

So "In the Shadows" is about Giselle, a 18 years old girl and her journey into a supernatural world she didn't even know existed, a world full of scary, powerful, creatures who drag her into their dark world without giving her any choice or chance to escape.

Giselle had a normal teenage life. She was a high school senior, had a loving boyfriend, caring friends and big plans for her future, away from her little town and her distant parents. And suddenly, in just one night, she loses everything. Her boyfriend cheats on her, her best friend proves to be someone - something else, and she gets thrust into a dark, terrifying world full of evil creatures. And that’s not even the worst part – the real problem is that she becomes one of them – well, more or less – and she gets torn  in different directions, because she is supposed to fulfill a prophecy and change destinies and not everyone is happy about that. But she wants none of that, anyway, but suddenly she becomes the main target of all the nightmarish creatures who have big, hidden expectations from her, or who just want to finish her off, this time for good.

Agh, there are so many things going on in this book, I don’t even know what to say about the plot, since I don’t want to give away anything major! Suffice it to say that Giselle goes through a lot of painful changes and unfortunately there are not many people on her side to help her. Every time she can finally begin to trust someone and hope they' ll help her get through all the madness, they show their other face and their hidden reasons. She can’t trust any one. She can’t go back home to her family. She can’t hide. All she can do is to try her best to stay alive and to move forward. If only she knew what that 'forward' meant!

I really liked the cast of characters. They’re all mysterious and intriguing. Some of them are likeable and even charming, but some of them are downright frightening and/or annoying. Either way, they are an important part of the story and their unpredictability kept me on the edge of the seat the whole time. However, I had a bit of a hard time connecting with the main character. I don’t blame her for being scared, hurt, confused, brokenhearted, especially after everything she's going through,  but being depressed and whiny doesn't seem to help her situation either. I don’t know, I just wanted her to stand up for herself a bit more. She had it in her to be strong and face the enemy and not let herself being played by all the mean people surrounding her, and maybe she tried to do that eventually, but she also cried and complained a lot. So even if somehow her behavior makes sense, that doesn’t mean I have to like it. Anyway, that’s just me, don’t let my personal perception of the main character hold you for picking up the book! ;)

All in all, this is rich, captivating story that I recommend to all YA Urban Fantasy fans, especially if you like vamps and want something totally new and intriguing in your story! There's also a lot of action, twist and turns to keep you invested throughout all the book. A lot of things happen very fast and you never know what to expect. Of course, the romance is not missing, and that's a part of the story I'm especially interested in, because things ended up pretty badly and shocking in this first installment of the trilogy and I kind of have a book crush on one of the characters who really surprised me there at the end!:)) I can't wait for the next book!
*Thank you Julieanne Lynch and Roxanne @ Bewitching Blog Tours for sending me a review copy of the book!

P.S. I really wish this book was available in hardback! I love the cover and it would have looked nice on my shelf! Speaking of which, you can still enter our giveaway for e-copies of the book and pretty, personalized prizes HERE!

In the Shadows by Julieanne Lynch Blog Tour: Author Interview & Giveaway

Hi!

Wow! It feels like I haven't read a YA debut novel about vampires in a very long time, so when I was given the opportunity to read and review In the Shadows, I jumped right in! And I wasn't disappointed at all! I'll tell you everything about it, but first, here's the interview I had with the awesome author Julieanne Lynch .:D

Deea: Hi! Thank you so much for taking the time to answer my questions! It’s an honor to have you on my blog!

Julieanne Lynch: Thank you so much for having me, it is great to be here.

D: First off, tell us a bit about yourself.

JL: I am a thirty-something mother of four, soon to be five,  married to my childhood sweetheart and am obsessed with Gothicism and classic literature.  I love fast cars, fine wine and adore old bookshops.  I can be highly sensitive but have a very bad temper, and nothing means more to me than family.

D: Can you give us a short description of “In the Shadows”?

JL: In The Shadows is about an eighteen year old girl, Giselle Bergman who is pretty much your average teenager and one most readers can relate to. Her family who is far from perfect love her, she is dating a popular guy and is best friends with a boy who would do anything for her. The only problem is she is deceived in the worst possible way, and by two people she loved the most. Giselle embarks on a journey that opens her eyes to the supernatural elements of her world – or what she thought was her world.

D: Your take on the vampire myths is very interesting and refreshing. I found the idea of Nelapsi especially intriguing! Can you tell us a few words about it? Where did you get your inspiration from?

JL: I have read many books about vampires and just adore the genre. But when I was planning my novel, I wanted to break away from the clichéd version of the mythical creature. So I investigated different European folklore‘s, and found Slavic folklore the most interesting. I loved the folklore that surround the Nelapsi, a breed of vampires who are known as gluttons amongst other vampiric clans, and originate from the Zemplin region of Slovakia.. The vampire both sucks the blood and suffocates his victims. It can also kill a person by a single glance. By bringing a plague, the nelapsi can kill a whole herd or an entire village. The people in the Zemplin region also believed that the vampire has two hearts and hence two souls.
The inspiration came from my love of vampiric-lore, and my obsession with the different descriptions of the nightwalker throughout literature.

D: If you didn’t write about vampires, what would you write about? Would you like to try a different genre as well?

JL: I love writing about demons, angels, gods, and goddesses, and I enjoy writing horror. I have also penned a more contemporary, middle of the road tear-jerker called Liddy’s Prayer. I like to keep an open mind to writing and like to step out of my comfort zone quite a lot.

D: There is a lot going on in the first book of the trilogy and Giselle goes through many painful changes. What was the most difficult part to write?

JL: The most difficult part for me to write was possibly Giselle finding out her mother had leukaemia and the dialogue written in Slavic. At the time of writing the book, my uncle had just passed away from prostate cancer, and the wounds within the family were still pretty raw, so I found it quite an emotional journey. In a sense I honed in on my own feelings about the illness and used that experience to bring some kind of realism to the scene.
With some of the dialogue being in Slavic in chapter seven, I had to turn to some friends who just happen to be from Slovakia to help me construct believable discourse between Atarah and Angelika, as well as the confusion it caused Giselle. Without my friends, the scene would not have worked.

D: This question might be a bit spoiler-ish, but can we hope for a new love interest for Giselle in the upcoming books? Things didn’t go that well for her in the love department so far.

JL: Yes, someone does capture her heart and helps heal the wounds, but we will have to wait until book three to really see how that plays out. In book two she begins to see that he is the one she wants, and has to battle her own insecurities to overcome her doubt.
(D: *Praying silently that someone is who I think he is**swoon*)

D: Speaking of upcoming books, what is coming up next for you? Are you working on a new story?

JL: Next, Walking With Shadows will be released and there will be the release of my adult novel Ice Goddess in the new year, as well as the last of the trilogy, Fighting Shadows. I am currently writing a new book called Into The Light, as well as editing Cinnamon Falls.
I am pretty busy for the next twelve months.

D: I also love asking authors a few short questions; it gives us the opportunity to know more about the person behind the author. So:
