My Bookish Pet Peeves

Hey!

I enjoy most of the books I read, because I (almost) always find something to like about them. Yes, I am a perfectionist and a moody reader, but when the story is good, the plot is interesting, the characters are like-able, the world building is very well done, I can overlook tiny flaws. But there are a few things that really tick me off. They make me grit my teeth, bang my head on the wall, roll my eyes, pull my hair and raise my hands up to sky in a "Oh, God, not again!" manner. (ok, I don't actually do those things, but you know the feeling.:)) I just drop a star or two from my final rating). Well, I'd like to complain talk about all this for a bit.

But before I do that, let me say that I am aware that there are exceptions, sometimes these things are very well done, there are books that are so good and authors who are so talented, that if I find any of these things in their works, it doesn't even matter. Also, I don't want to be mean or disrespectful to any author, I'm just stating my personal opinion about things I don't like in general. That being said, here we go:

   1.  The dumb, whiny heroine
We meet them mostly in YA novels, in the first book of the series.

Sometimes the heroines are so disoriented, stubborn, blind etc that they make me want to reach into the book, grab them by the shoulders and shake the hell out of them. They're wimpy, whiny and annoying, everyone figures things out before they do, they ask ridiculous questions, make stupid decisions etc.

Ok, I get it: they are young, inexperienced, scared, confused, betrayed, hurt but THEY.ARE.NOT.STUPID. Or just some pathetic crybabies! Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying they all have to be tough little cookies from the very start, I understand that they have to grow and develop as characters, they can't be perfect and all that. But seriously, there must be some kind of balance! Don’t underestimate them and don’t make them the dumbest girls on the block, exaggerating with their flaws, imperfections and insecurities is so not necessary!

   2. The Love Triangle
*sigh* I guess there's always been a little drama because of this subject around the blogosphere. I'll try to keep this short, but you're going to hate me anyway.;)

So... What I believe is that love triangles are annoying and as of lately, over used. (again, especially in YA novels). They kind of lost their appeal. Mostly, because they are so predictable. Just let me tell you a little story: Enters lead character A. She's a normal, nice girl with a normal life. Suddenly, she meets X. (Whoa!) He's all Mr. Tall Dark and Handsome, he's interesting,  mysterious, has a troubled past and a dangerous side. They fall in love, but something bad happens and then they realize that being together is very dangerous (for themselves or for someone/everyone else). They broke apart. But hey, never fear! Here comes boy Y to the rescue! He's the always caring, always nice bff who suddenly becomes good boyfriend material (wow, when did he become so handsome?) And then there's a lot of action and drama yada yada yada and A and X find each other again, cry, hug each other, swear eternal love and get their HEA. But what about Y? Oh, he was too nice to be happy anyway!*waves hand dismissively* It's not like he ever had a real chance to get A in the first place! But he's a good guy and after he gets over the heart wrenching refusal of A, he'll find someone nice to love him back. Hey, maybe even someone we met before in the story - someone veeery important!*snort* Sounds familiar? Well, this is the kind of dynamic that annoys me to no end. Again, I know love triangles can be very well done (honestly, some of my all times favorite series have love triangles) but... Yeah, there's always a big BUT when it comes to them. *weary*

   3. Insta-love/Insta-lust
Do I really need to say more here?

I understand when A and X being instantly drawn to each other is absolutely necessary for the main plot, but sometimes it happens way too fast! (I recently started reading a book where A and X find each other and obviously fall head over heels in love on the second page. Enough said.) Not to mention what comes next: the obsessive, stalker behavior.*thud* And if I can deal with that kind of thing in YA novels, I definitely can't be ok with it in Adult Paranormal Romance. You know, when people rip their clothes off from the very first page, no matter that the guy stalked her, broke into her apartment, seems to be very dangerous and she doesn't even know his name - or anything for that matter - about him. I mean, c'mon! Really?! *shudders*

   4. Clichés
I'm not talking about the big ones (like: new girl in town, all the boys from her new school fall for her and yet she never notices; or the perpetual family issues), but those tiny ones that show up here and there just to make you mad the story more dramatic and interesting. (X tells A under no circumstances to get out of the house because the Big Bad could be out there waiting for her, yet when he turns his back... Surprise, surprise, what does she do? Goes out and whoa! the Big Bad comes out of nowhere and grabs her! *groans* Or: when A finally musters the courage to walk up to X and talk to him/confront him/declare to him, he's talking to/kissing her enemy.) Sorry, maybe these are not the best examples, but I'm tired and I can't remember anything more specific right now. But I think you get what I mean - clichés are clichés after all!

So... that's what really bothers me in books. As I said, I understand there are ways around them and they can be exceptionally well done and good for the story, but... I'm very picky when it comes to books featuring them. And though I didn't want to give names in this post, I can't not mention a debut novel I read this summer that had none of these issues: NONE! Blood Magic by Tessa Gratton. In my humble opinion, this book was very, very good and perfectly balanced! Gratton is really awesome; she could write a 400 pages book with all kinds of elements in it: love, drama, tension, paranormal, action, twists, turns, mystery, secrets; she could be very original, keep my interest from the first page to the last AND avoid all those annoying things, so she has my eternal respect and gratitude! Ok, I'll stop fangirlying now (is that a word?), but I'd send her a big virtual hug and some home made special Romanian cookies (those wouldn't be virtual; give me her address and I'll send them.LOL) just for being fabulous. *bows*

Phew! That's a lot of ramble! But I really want to know your opinion: do you have bookish pet peeves? Is there anything that usually annoys you in books and makes you avoid them? Do you share some of mine? Let me know!

And now that I got that out of my chest, I can go back to reviewing the book that got this started! :))

Spotted: Starcrossed UK Trailer

Hey everyone!

Did you see the UK trailer for Starcrossed by Josephine Angelini?! Wow! Just... Wow!

Well that's what I call a good trailer! I think it really gets the essence and the feeling of the book! And the actors are so cute! Anyway, I love it! (BTW, the book is super awesome! And it comes out in a few days in the US.)

------------------------

Now, on a side note for my Romanian fellows: I'm going to Bookfest tomorrow (the coolest national Book Fair around here). So if you want to meet and greet, or to keep you updated, to make pics, to get you books or anything (they have a lot of events, new releases, book sales and other cool stuff there)... Let me know. ;) I'll probably make a post on Sunday and tell you everything about it.*excited*

The Secret Circle - yay or nay? (rambling)

Hello everyone!

All the buzz around CW's upcoming TV show, The Secret Circle, makes me wonder what do you guys think about all this? Are you excited or just rolling your eyes at yet another show based upon LJ Smith's books? Do you think it's going to be better or just living in the shadow of The Vampire Diaries? Or you just don't care about any of the TV shows? Let's discuss! :))

But first, let's recap:

The story:

Cassie Blake was a happy, normal teenage girl - until her mother Amelia dies in what appears to be a tragic accidental fire. Orphaned and deeply saddened, Cassie moves in with her warm and loving grandmother Jane in the beautiful small town of Chance Harbor, Washington - the town her mother left so many years before - where the residents seem to know more about Cassie than she does about herself. As Cassie gets to know her high school classmates, including sweet-natured Diana and her handsome boyfriend Adam, brooding loner Nick, mean-girl Faye and her sidekick Melissa, strange and frightening things begin to happen. When her new friends explain that they are all descended from powerful witches, and they've been waiting for Cassie to join them and complete a new generation of the Secret Circle, Cassie refuses to believe them - until Adam shows her how to unlock her incredible magical powers. But it's not until Cassie discovers a message from her mother in an old leather-bound book of spells hidden in her mother's childhood bedroom, that she understands her true and dangerous destiny. What Cassie and the others don't yet know is that darker powers are at play, powers that might be linked to the adults in the town, including Diana's father and Faye's mother - and that Cassie's mother's death might not have been an accident.

The cast:

-The series stars:Britt Robertson as Cassie Blake, Thomas Dekker as Adam Conant, Gale Harold as Charles Meade, Phoebe Tonkin as Faye Chamberlain, Jessica Parker Kennedy as Melissa, Shelly Henning as Diana Meade, Louis Hunter as Nick, Ashley Crow as Jane Blake and Natasha Henstridge as Dawn Chamberlain.
- Based upon the book series by L.J. Smith (author of "The Vampire Diaries" book series)
- Executive producers Kevin Williamson ("The Vampire Diaries," "Scream," "Dawson's Creek"), Andrew Miller ("Imaginary Bitches"), Leslie Morgenstein ("The Vampire Diaries," "Gossip Girl") and Gina Girolamo.

As for me... Well, I'm really excited about it! The Vampire Diaries (the book series) was my least favorite from all LJ Smith's books and yet, I LOVE the show! (Damon!*swoon* Need I say more?!) But I really enjoyed reading The Secret Circle, so I can't wait to see what they make of it! There are going to be similarities between the two, of course (well, they both have CW's, LJ Smith's and Williamson's signature) but I trust them to do a good job (as long as they don't overdo the teen drama). And I'm not very happy about the actors starring the main characters, but maybe they'll win me over with magnificent acting! LOL

Ok, your turn to ramble. :)) Feel free to gossip or complain or to tell me who's your favorite actor or to squee in delight or whatever! If you haven't been raptured by zombies yet, that is. ;)

Week in Review & Random thoughts (part I)

Hey!

In case you're wondering what I've been up to lately, here's the umm...short version:
  • Aside from being buried in papers and books and notebooks and working on THE thesis (see the note on the right sidebar *sigh*) and almost 3 days without Internet *epic fail*, I got some time to catch up with my TBR pile. And guess what happened? *bats eyelashes*
  • Once again, I've been conned by Holly Black's writing style while reading Red Glove; reading Starcrossed by Jossie Angelini left me a little heart broken and day dreaming about star-crossed lovers and eternal happiness; then, after trying not to let it play with my Mind, I've been helplessly Disillusioned by Carolyn Crane's cliffhanger at the end of Double Cross. *still shaken* But thankfully, Dawn McCullough-White introduced me to this Wanted! cool, kick ass heroine, Cameo, the assassin (my first book with a zombie-like lead character) which was awesome! And finally, thanks to Rachel Vincent's series, I've realized Shifters are very cool (always been a vampires kind of girl; popping bones/getting all furry/walking around naked doesn't appeal to me *shudders*).
  • I've been working on reviews for all these books and I'll post them ASAP! (I wish I was better at multitasking)
  • Also, I've got an Audiobooks Fever (after spending 9865232 hours per day buried in books or in front of the computer, relaxing listening to an audiobook feels just like heaven!) and I've bought some more. I'll talk about them in the IMM post. Other than that, I've been a good girl and respected my book buying ban.:D (but I'm planning to go to a book fair as soon as it stops raining, so if anything catches my eye there....)
  • I don't know if you've noticed, but I've read a lot of fantabulous, thoroughly enjoyable books lately! Sadly, I haven't always been so lucky, so I'm going to post a list with books/series that didn't work for me. Yikes!
  • Anyway, now I so need a fun, light, clean read! With no dramatic love triangles or heart wrenching cliffhangers! (feel free to recommend anything:;))
  • Oh! I almost forgot! I want to celebrate my graduation with you as well, so I'll host a giveaway! I'll make a special post for it after I figure out all the details and the Spring Carnival ends, but you'll have all month to enter and I'll pick a winner(s?) on my grad day. Details to come!;)
That's all for now. If you're still here, have a nice, sunny day and happy reading!

Just saying #2 - Blog Tips

Hello again!;)

I didn't forget about the reviews - I'm working on them, I promise - I just wanted to make another quick post. :D

There are a lot of great book blogs and amazing giveaways around the blogosphere so everything should be fun and easy for us. But sometimes things get too complicated and kind of annoying, with all the rules and stuff people have on their blogs. I'm probably not making any sense, so go to Mary's blog and figure it out. She's written a few rules/ideas that should help us be more organized with our blogs and giveaways. ;)

Goodbye 2010 - Hello 2011!

Hey!

I really had the most wonderful time of the year, especially because I spent the holidays with my family.;) I also had a get-together with my awesome cousins (we grew up together, but being in high school and college in different cities, we haven't seen each other in years - and now we met again and had a blast even as grown up ladies *evil grin*). And now I'm finally back home!:D After spending so much time with people I care about, just chilling and having fun, it's a bit hard to come back to the real life - to my life. But in the same time, I have a lot of energy, hope and plans for the new year!:D

Since this is my first post of 2011, I figured I should write my conclusions about 2010 and a bit about my plans for 2011.

All in all, 2010 it's been a good year. I met a lot of people, I learned a lot of things, I graduated, I moved out, I reconnected with old friends and I gained new ones, I quit my job (ok, that wasn't a very good thing, but I needed it), I got to see who's my real friend and who's not etc. I know there were moments when I was pissed, depressed, whiny, disappointed, doubtful... But they passed and now, when I look back, I don't regret anything. And I know that everything is going to work out eventually and that all those things will help me in the future.
So... Defining 2010 in a few words: changes; improvement; friendship; gratitude.

As for 2011, I think it will be a good year, too. Or maybe I'm just very positive and enthusiastic today.:P  But I do have a lot of plans. Speaking of plans, here are some of my 2011 resolutions:
  • Be positive (try to see the bright side of things more often!)
  • Read, write, review more! (not necessarily in that order)
  • Improve your sleep schedule! (it's not ok to go to bed when normal people wake up)
  • Drink less coffee!
  • Be more active (remember that work out program? Do it!)
  • Spend less time in front of the computer! (yeah, sure)
  • Pay more attention to your studies! (how about an internship abroad?:D)
  • Be friendly with everyone - even if you can't stand them :))
  • Improve your English/ Spanish/ French!
  • Enjoy life more!
  • Deal with your problems right away - stop stalling or hiding in Your Fantasy Land (books, TV shows etc)!
  • Be careful with your 'to-read' list - stop buying so many books when you still have a lot of them waiting to be read!
  • Be more organized!
I'll probably add more to that list. But there's no pressure, right?:))

Oh... and happy new year! :)

xoxo

Murphy's Laws

Hey!

As my friends often say, I think too much. :) Yup, for me, every situation turns out more complicated that it is. Because I tend to analyze everything, all the details, to speculate, to balance the pros & cons etc. I know, not such a great and practical idea. Still, this is me.

And speaking of this over-thinking, it's easy to report some events to Murphy's Laws. Thus,  here are some of the most common laws:
  • If anything can go wrong, it will (at the most inopportune time).
  • Left to themselves, things tend to go from bad to worse.
  • If everything seems to be going well, you have obviously overlooked something.
  • Smile . . . tomorrow will be worse.
  • Nothing is as easy as it looks.
  • You will always find something in the last place you look.
  • Just when you think things cannot get any worse, they will.
  • Remember the "Boomer-rang" effect; Whatever you do will always come back.
  • Any time you put an item in a "safe place", it will never be seen again.
  • Traffic is inversely proportional to how late you are, or are going to be.
  • Chaos always wins, because it's better organized.
  • When you wear new shoes for the first time, everyone will step on them.
  • All the good ones are taken.
  • If everything seems to be going well, you have obviously overlooked something.
  •  Doing it the hard way is always easier.
  • No matter what goes wrong, there is always someone who knew it would happen and enjoys saying "I told you so".
 That was fun. *rolls eyes*
