Hi guys!
Today I have a special treat for you. I got the chance to sit down and chat with Patrick, one of my favorite lead characters I met last year. He's the kind of character who speaks more through his actions, so I was very excited to ask him a few questions and to see what he has to say and to find out more about him.
Patrick is the love interest in Seers by Heather Frost (my glowing review). Now that the sequel is coming out, knowing so much more about him is going to be very helpful. You'll see, he's very sweet and charming and it's impossible not to love him!;)
Deea: Hi Patrick! Thanks for taking the time to answer my questions!
Patrick: Thank you, for inviting me.
Deea: Tell us a bit about yourself and how did you become a Guardian.
Patrick: Well, I was born in 1780, in Ireland—Wexford County. I had one younger brother, and a great love for painting. I was pressured into joining the United Irishmen when I was eighteen, and was consequently shot and killed by a British soldier on June 4, 1798. That’s when I chose to become a Guardian. The choice wasn’t an easy one, but it was really the only option open to me. I’d promised to protect my younger brother, Sean, and becoming a Guardian was the only way I could really fulfill that promise.
I left Ireland soon after, and have never returned. So far, I’ve spent most of my immortal existence in Europe, working solo to hunt down the Demons that prey on humans. That kept me extremely busy during both the World Wars, and I found a fair amount of Seers during that time. It was soon after the second World War ended that I made my way to America. In New York, I got my first real partner, Toni Alverez, and we’ve been together ever since. We’re currently living in New Mexico.
D: What’s the best part about being a Guardian? What about the most difficult part?
P: The best part? Well, I love watching societies and technologies progress over time. It’s remarkable, how rapidly humankind progresses. But the absolute best part is Kate. If I hadn’t become a Guardian, I never would have met her. The most difficult part is the separation from my family, and old friends. They’re in Heaven, and that’s a place I’ll never be able to go.
D: When you’re not in school or taking care of your Guardian responsibilities, what do you do for fun? Do you have any hobbies?
P: I love to read, just about anything. I especially enjoy studying up on ancient cultures, because I will occasionally come into contact with extremely old Guardians. It makes for some interesting conversations. I can’t recall even half of the amazing stories I’ve heard in the past. Stories that never make it into history books.
I’m also developing a love of photography, and Kate keeps prompting me to begin painting again. I just don’t know if I’m quite ready for that, though. Too many memories. But maybe someday.
But on any given day you’ll find me with Kate, or watching TV with Toni. He’s absolutely obsessed with catching me up on all the greatest sitcoms, and the newest top shows.
D: What did you think about Kate when you saw her for the first time?
P: I was first struck with how pretty she was. Her pictures hadn’t done her justice. The main thing I remember about that first encounter, though, was the overwhelming sense that she was like me. When I saw her face, looked into her eyes . . . I don’t know, I just felt like we had a common history. After all, death had played a large part in getting us both to where we currently are. I’m a Guardian, she’s a Seer. We’d both lost our parents, we’d both found ourselves in new and strange worlds, but we were both trying to make the best of what life had given us. It was then that I firmly resolved to helping her out. I wanted to help her any way I could, because I could relate to her pain, and I wanted to lessen it in any way possible.
D: Can you describe Kate in three words?
P: Brilliant. Self-sacrificing. Compassionate.
D: What was one of your favorite moments with Kate?
P: The day in the cemetery, where I was finally able to tell her everything about Guardians, Demons, and Seers. It was a quiet moment, and for really the first time she became completely relaxed around me. I don’t know if she feels the same way, (she’d gone through a lot that day, and then I dumped a heap of life-altering information on her,) but I believe that was a very peaceful moment. It felt like we were the only ones in the world.
D: If you could change anything from your past, what would that be?
P: I honestly don’t like to dwell on regrets. I have them, obviously, but the past is unchangeable. Choices define us, and in the end I wouldn’t want to change anything that would have kept me from meeting Kate.
D: Thank you!
P: Thank you for your time, and questions.
*swoon* See what I mean?

Nice interview. Seems a bit too modern language but I'm glad that so I can better understand what he says. :)) I had my eyes on this book for some time, so maybe it's time for me to have it!
ReplyDelete@CCAM Thanks!:)) I think that's the point, did you see when he was born?=)) He can be old school, but he's one of the nice guys - which is a good change, considering all the brooding, mysterious, bad boys we get to read about these days. It's a cute read. :)
