Review: Just for Now (Sea Breeze #4) by Abbi Glines

Hi!

Just for Now (Sea Breeze #4)
by Abbi Glines

Published: October 30th 2012
by Simon & Schuster
Format: Kindle Edition, 304 pages

Goodreads

The day Preston Drake figured out that wealthy women paid well for a set of tight abs and a pretty face his life turned around.

The run down rat-infested trailer he had shared with his alcoholic mother and three younger siblings was now only a place he visited to pay the bills and stock the pantry with food.

He no longer worried about his family starving or living without electricity. The money he made entertaining rich older women more than covered his family’s needs and his own. He had it all figured out. Except…

There was this girl.

She was as innocent as he was tainted.

Amanda Hardy wished her knees didn’t get weak when Preston walked into a room. She hated the fact her heart raced when he flashed his smile in her direction. He had a different girl in his bed every night. He was the kind of boy a smart girl ran from. So, why was she coming up with ways to get close to him? Even when it was obvious he wanted to keep her at a distance.

Maybe her heart knew something the world didn’t. Maybe Preston Drake was more than just a pretty face.

My thoughts on Breathe (Sea Breeze #1),

My thoughts:

I'm keeping these reviews short and sweet, because that's what these books are for me: short and sweet one-sit-reads that always put me in a good mood. I love Abbi Glines' writing and her books always melt my heart and put a smile on my face. It's kind of amazing the amount of emotions her characters and their stories make me feel in such a short time!

Just for Now was one of my most anticipated releases of the season. I love this series and this group we've been following since book #1 and I've been dying to get Preston's entire story since book #2 (or was it book #1? Hmm, I don't know, but I've always been intrigued by him and believed there was a good story right there. And I was right.) He was funny, charming and a real player - but somehow different than Cage. And I was happy when I realized that Amanda was going to be the girl to get under his skin and show us what was behind those walls of his, but, considering what we knew of Amanda and his history, my first thought was 'Uh-oh. This one is going to be tricky'.

Amanda is Marcus' (Preston's best friend we met in book #2) sweet and innocent little sister, which means she's totally off limits for him. Besides, considering his life style, she's way out of his league. But the attraction between them is undeniable so maybe, just maybe, it could work between them? But at what cost?

The guys were my family, but Marcus was my brother. Blood didn’t matter. He’d cared when no one else had known there was something to care about. I had to let this fascination I had with his sister go.

It's been a while since I read the previous books, but I think I was more emotionally connected with this one and these characters. My heart broke for them even from the beginning, when something meant to happen for a long time didn't go as it was supposed to. I really felt for Amanda, and even though sometimes I just wanted to reach into the book and shake her, to scream at her to be stronger, most of the time I just wanted to hug her, to support her and cheer her on, because if anyone could work things out and be happy with Preston, it was her. Especially when everyone on Earth and their sister kept warning her away from him and trying to get in their way or to control her life. Grrr! But she was stronger than everyone else thought. She was sweet, selfless and caring and warmed up to Preston and his family's life easily.

For the first time in my life, I didn’t feel alone. (Preston)

Willow sighed. “She’ll need room to breathe soon enough, Marcus. You can love her and care about her while you stand back and let her make her own decisions. She isn’t the little girl you took care of all your life. She’s a big girl now. Don’t forget that.” (Did I ever mention that Willow is my favorite heroine in this series? Yup, she still is. )

Amanda always had feelings for Preston and his behavior hurt her many times. Not to mention that she had to keep everything to herself, because she never wanted to ruin Preston's relationship with her brother and she thought Preston would never notice her. Not the way she craved for, anyway. But even when she started acting on those feeling and fighting for the man she loved, things didn't get easier. There were lots of complications, insecurities and hurt feelings on both sides.

Manda was different. She made me feel things. Things I’d prayed I’d never experience, because acting on them would be impossible.

Preston stared at me a moment, and then a small smile touched his lips for the first time today. I was so happy to see that smile. “You’re amazing, and you don’t even know it.”

There was passion, but there was also pain. There was hope, but there was also hopelessness. There was love, but there was also betrayal. There were tears, but there were also smiles and moments of joy. Such a beautiful, emotional story!

Anyway, I love Preston! He's sweet, charming, protective, incredibly hot and has a wicked sense of humor. What else could a girl ask for?:D Yes, he has his secrets and all, but he's a survivor and a fighter and will stop at nothing when it comes to the people he loves and their well being. Opening up to Amanda and believing in their relationship was probably one of the hardest things for him to do. His story was heartbreaking, but I loved the way he and Amanda clicked by the end. And OMG! That chemistry, that passion! Phew, despite their issues and bumps in the road, their relationship was hot and intense! Really, this book was a major swoon-fest! (not suited for a YA audience, btw).

I loved that all the previous couples made an appearance as well, I missed them. :) I just love this group and how close they all are! And I know we're getting back to Cage and Eva for the next book (eep!), but I wouldn't mind it if Jason and Dewayne got their own stories after that either. ;)

I have yet to read a book by Abbi Glines and be disappointed. Every time I finish one of her books, I think the next one can't get any better than that. And then she writes a story like this one and I'm blown away all over again! I'm looking forward to the next one!

Other favorite quotes:

I didn’t want to keep my distance. I might not get to have her again, but I liked being near her. She made me happy. She made the darkness not seem too smothering. “I want to be friends,” I explained, watching her chew her bottom lip nervously.
“I’ll be good. I promise. I’ll be the best damn friend you’ve ever had.” His voice had lowered into a husky whisper. I shivered from the sexy sound. (...)
“Friends don’t get this close, Preston,” I said, and I started to take a step back when he pulled me tightly against him. “No, Manda, they don’t. But I can’t stop wanting you close. Can we be close friends?” He asked, lowering his head until his warm breath tickled my ear. Closing my eyes tightly, I grabbed his arms to keep myself steady. What was he doing? “I like you close. Real close.”

“Nothing about this thing we have is a bad thing. I’m not gonna lie about it: I don’t deserve you. I’m sure as hell not good enough for you, but as long as you want me, I’m all yours.”

He smiled and lowered his head until his lips hovered over mine. “I love you with a scary, insane, wild, amazing love. I always will. No one else could ever make me feel this way.”

Waiting on Wednesday #36 - Vengeance Bound by Justina Ireland

Hi!

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly feature hosted by Jill @ Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases we're eagerly anticipating.

My pick today...

Vengeance Bound
by Justina Ireland

Release date: April 2nd 2013
by Simon & Schuster Books For Young Readers
Format: Hardcover, 320 pages

Goodreads:

The Goddess Test meets Dexter in an edgy, compelling debut about one teen’s quest for revenge… no matter how far it takes her.

Cory Graff is not alone in her head. Bound to a deal of desperation made when she was a child, Cory’s mind houses the Furies—the hawk and the serpent—lingering always, waiting for her to satisfy their bloodlust. After escaping the asylum where she was trapped for years, Cory knows how to keep the Furies quiet. By day, she lives a normal life, but by night, she tracks down targets the Furies send her way. And she brings down Justice upon them.

Cory’s perfected her system of survival, but when she meets a mysterious boy named Niko at her new school, she can’t figure out how she feels about him. For the first time, the Furies are quiet in her head around a guy. But does this mean that Cory’s finally found someone who she can trust, or are there greater factors at work? As Cory’s mind becomes a battlefield, with the Furies fighting for control, Cory will have to put everything on the line to hold on to what she’s worked so hard to build.

This one pretty much had me at the The Goddess Test meets Dexter tag line. I love mythology books and the Furies always seem to be scary, yet fascinating. Having them in your mind constantly can't be fun. I can't wait to find out how Cory deals with them and what's up with this mysterious boy!

So... What are you waiting on this week?:)

Waiting on Wednesday #35 - Level 2 by Lenore Appelhans

Hi!

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly feature hosted by Jill @ Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases we're eagerly anticipating.

Here's a book I've heard great things about lately, and I can't wait to add to my reading pile:

Level 2 (The Memory Chronicles #1)

 by Lenore Appelhans

Release date: January 15th 2013
by Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers
 Format: Hardcover, 288 pages

Goodreads:

In this gripping exploration of a futuristic afterlife, a teen discovers that death is just the beginning.

Since her untimely death the day before her eighteenth birthday, Felicia Ward has been trapped in Level 2, a stark white afterlife located between our world and the next. Along with her fellow drones, Felicia passes the endless hours reliving memories of her time on Earth and mourning what she’s lost—family, friends, and Neil, the boy she loved.

Then a girl in a neighboring chamber is found dead, and nobody but Felicia recalls that she existed in the first place. When Julian—a dangerously charming guy Felicia knew in life—comes to offer Felicia a way out, Felicia learns the truth: If she joins the rebellion to overthrow the Morati, the angel guardians of Level 2, she can be with Neil again.

Suspended between Heaven and Earth, Felicia finds herself at the center of an age-old struggle between good and evil. As memories from her life come back to haunt her, and as the Morati hunt her down, Felicia will discover it’s not just her own redemption at stake… but the salvation of all mankind.

This one seems to be a perfect mix of Dystopia and Paranormal. I love books that explore the afterlife and the good vs evil eternal battle, so seeing both of those elements in one book should be interesting. I love the kickass cover as well, so I can't wait to read this original story and to see if it's as gripping and edgy as it seems!:)

This week, I'm looking forward to...

Poison Princess (The Arcana Chronicles #1)

by Kresley Cole

Release Date: October 2nd 2012
by Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers
Hardcover, 384 pages

Goodreads:
Sixteen-year-old Evie Greene thought her horrific apocalyptic hallucinations were a sign that she was slowly losing her mind. But when her visions come true, decimating the world around her and killing everyone she loves, Evie is forced to accept that she was seeing the future.

Fighting for her life and desperate for answers, she turns to wrong-side-of-the-bayou classmate, the gorgeous and dangerous Jackson Deveaux for help. As Jackson and Evie race to find the source of her visions, they meet others who have got the same call and discover that Evie is not the only one with special powers. An ancient prophesy is being played out, and as the battle between good and evil intensifies, it is not always clear who is on which side…

Eep! I'm so excited about this one! I already spotted a few glowing reviews here and there, but we're talking Kresley Cole here, so of course this book is going to be awesome! I came to her books really late (I did a marathon of her Immortal After Dark series and read all books back to back this past spring) and I became addicted to her writing! I can't wait to see her take on YA. She's fabulous at creating original worlds, witty, kick-ass characters and sizzling romance! So, strong heroine, gorgeous and dangerous hero, ancient prophecies and the good ol' battle between good and evil? WIN!

What are you waiting on this week?

Spotted: Clockwork Prince (The Infernal Devices #2) by Cassandra Clare Official Trailer!

Hi!

Oh, wow! The Clockwork Prince official trailer is finally here! It has been released earlier today
exclusively on EW.com - go HERE to watch it - and then come back to tell me what you think of it, hehe. ;)

***UPDATE: Here it is now:

Have you noticed how book trailers are getting better and better lately? How they get real actors and catch the feeling of the books? Well, I think this one is absolutely amazing! Then again, it's not like we expected anything less from Vanya from  VLC Productions. I think it's really well done, everything seems so real! And don't you just love Ed Westwick' s voice on the background? *melts*

Also, looks like there are some rumors about an upcoming Infernal Devices movie. Check out THIS ARTICLE for details. (Thanks Mundie Moms for the tip!)

Clockwork Prince (The Infernal Devices #2) - Pub. Date: December 6th 2011

P.S. If you live in Romania and haven't started this series yet (a pity, really), you can always get a pretty hardcover copy from Leda Books HERE.

Have a great week!

Review: Fury by Elizabeth Miles

Hello everyone!

I'm so sorry for being MIA! Wow, I've never been away from the blogosphere for so long! Not even when I had my final exams or my graduation!*sobs* And I really missed it... Anyway, I'm not going to bore you with my melodrama now... But you know how it is: life happens. I didn't even have an Internet connection until recently. So here's me trying get back on track... Again. *sigh*

***

I got the chance to read a few awesome debut novels in the past few weeks and I'll try to post my reviews for most of them asap. I'm going to start with Fury, because it comes out tomorrow and I want to encourage you to pick it up!:)

Fury (The Fury Trilogy #1)
by Elizabeth Miles

Pub.: August 30th 2011
by Simon Pulse
Hardcover, 352 pages
Excerpt / Book Depository / Amazon

Sometimes sorry isn't enough....

It’s winter break in Ascension, Maine. The snow is falling and everything looks pristine and peaceful. But not all is as it seems...

Between cozy traditions and parties with her friends, Emily loves the holidays. And this year’s even better--the guy she’s been into for months is finally noticing her. But Em knows if she starts things with him, there’s no turning back. Because his girlfriend is Em’s best friend.

On the other side of town, Chase is having problems of his own. The stress of his home life is starting to take its toll, and his social life is unraveling. But that’s nothing compared to what’s really haunting him. Chase has done something cruel...something the perfect guy he pretends to be would never do. And it’s only a matter of time before he’s exposed.

In Ascension, mistakes can be deadly. And three girls—three beautiful, mysterious girls—are here to choose who will pay.

Em and Chase have been chosen.

Wow! This book was so not what I expected it to be! It was … different. Creepy. Confusing. Twisted. Unpredictable. Imaginative. Mesmerizing. Funny. Insightful. Profound. Realistic. Suspenseful. Dark. Edgy. Heartbreaking.  Yet… Beautiful and very interesting. In one word, unputdownable!:)

I must confess that I wasn’t impressed with the beginning of the book – in fact, I found it a bit boring, with all the usual high school drama going on. But then the Furies came into the picture and suddenly everything became more interesting, twisted and oh, so deliciously creepy! If I had a hard time getting into this book in the beginning, by the end I was completely compelled by it, holding my breath and gripping the edges of my seat because of all the tension and suspense it got!

The story is told in 3rd person, alternatively from Em’s (Emily) and Chase’s POV. They are just some teenagers who try to get through high school and over all the drama surrounding them. All they want is to blend in and to be happy for a change.  But in trying to do so, they make bad decisions and hurt people they care about – and the Furies are right there, watching, and not a bit pleased with what’s going on. And of course they can’t just let things go, because Em and Chase have to pay for their mistakes and for the pain they have caused. And that’s when the story becomes a scary, nightmarish roller coaster.

Though very mysterious and beautiful in their ethereal forms, the Furies are dangerous, cruel and they love playing maddening games in the name of justice – apparently, they have a reason for all the creepy things they're doing. And you never know what to expect from them. You never know where they are going to be next. What are they going to do. Who is going to die next. What’s the reason for their twisted actions (or if there is any reason at all or they are just doing it all for fun). What’s their purpose. What's behind that beautiful, seductive smile. But for now, Em and Chase are their playthings, and though they are in constant danger and all kind of crazy things happen around them, nobody believes them. Because they don’t even know for sure what’s going on. Not that anyone could actually help them or stop the Furies, once they’ve been marked by them. But it’s too late anyway. There’s no escaping from the destiny the Furies have prepared for them. Because sometimes, being sorry is not enough. Although... Maybe true love can change something in the end. If so, what's the price?

All things considered,  the end was totally unexpected. Not a big cliffhanger, but still crazy. It left important questions unanswered and it made me way too impatient for the next book. I love Elizabeth Miles' writing style, it’s very imaginative and engaging, so I will definitely pick up the next books in the series and recommend them to everyone who wants to read a fresh, delicious, creepy YA series!:) Also, I LOVE the US cover!

In My Mailbox #7

Hey guys!

In My Mailbox is a weekly meme hosted by Kristi @ The Story Siren and inspired by Alea @ Pop Culture Junkie.

I haven't done an IMM post in a while, so I've got a lot of books to show you today! They are like 3 weeks worth, so it's going to be a very long post. (I got most of them a couple of weeks ago, but people were showing their Book-Expo America hauls then, so I just kept my little pile to myself and drooled over their posts instead LOL).

Part I:

  • Sarutul mortii – Oana Stoica Mujea & Andra Pavel
(which would be Kiss of Death in English; it's a crime, mystery Romanian novel)
(won from Tezza @ Spades High Reads)
(I did a lot of jumping up and down around the room when I got this, because it's one of my favorite debut novels of  2011 and
it came as a surprise from Aimée, who > signed and personalized it ♥)
(for review from BookSneeze.Com)
(I won this in a contest @ AwesomeSauce Book Club a while ago and I think I mentioned it before,
but it didn't make its way to my mailbox until recently, so here it is)
(despite all the not so positive reviews and the similarities with Twilight, I ADORE this book! And the  cover > is so pretty and shiny...♥ )
(the Romanian editions; it took them very long to get in the mail)
(I got it as a RAK from Evie  @ The Bookfiend Reviews Books
so this involved a lot of squealing as well, because I've been dying to read it for ages
and Evie even sent me her hardcover! copy all the away from the US!♥ )

Part II

(Elemental Assassin, #1, #2) by Jennifer Estep
(I got the audiobooks a while ago and because this became one of my favorite UF series,
 I wanted to have the paperbacks on my shelf too;
books #3 and #4 should be on their way)
(The Disillusionists Trilogy #1 & #2) by Carolyn Crane
(This series has a very special place in my heart, so of course I had to get the paperbacks too;
if only Book Depo wouldn't have sent me
Double Cross with dented cover...*sigh*;
 anyway, review to come)
(from author to review)
(from the publisher Harlequin Teen UK aka MiraInk)
(as a RAK from Birgit @ The Book Garden)

(I have a little problem with this series; the covers don't match; I also have two copies of The Iron Daughter, so I think I'll give away one of them and then buy myself copies of the other books in the series to match)

(Madison Avery trilogy) by Kim Harrison (bought)

Once again, the covers don't match. I hate it when that happens! And I don't understand why publishers change the covers of just some of the books in the series (see Nightshade by Andrea Cremer). Or why they publish the first book in the series one size, and the last one in the series another size (see The Iron Fey series). Grr! If you have the same problem with any of these series and my books could match your series, let me know, and maybe we could trade them or something! Makes sense? LOL)

Part III
 *e-books, e-galleys, audibooks

(I requested them like years ago, but they just got approved last week)
Oh my... This book... *sigh* I've been DYING to read it! I sort of hyperventilated when I got that email from  Simon & Schuster and I thought I was going to read it right away! But then the exams got in the way... Then review requests from authors... Then the Graduation... Then Real Life madness... *sigh* Anyways, as soon as I get myself a bit organized and the To-Review list gets shorter, forget about all the books mentioned above, Wildefire is what I'm going to read! (/end of rambling)

(you know, to complete my not-matching Iron Fey series)
(audiobook; I'm almost done with this one and it's pretty good, I really enjoyed it so far;
the narrator does a great job IMO)
I got this from my friend Cristina, who blogs at Bibliophile Mystery (btw, check out her cute blog), because she and Julia here drove me crazy with this series so I said it was about time to give it a shot and see what's all the fuss about! Problem is I actually love it, but there's no way I'm going to buy the gazillion audiobooks that are now available for this series (I'm not rich here people), so girls, you brought this on me, you give me the books!;) Thanks!♥

Um... Still here? I also got a lot of cute little bookmarks from the Book Depo with all those orders, but I'm too lazy to take a picture now. :))

Thank you to all the authors, publishers and amazing bloggers who sent me the books! You all made my hellacious exams period so much better!♥

Phew! That's a lot of pics and links! LOL I have a feeling I'm still forgetting something, but I'll mention it in my next IMM...

What did you get in your mailbox? (Feel free to leave links in the comments)

Happy reading!

P.S. There's still time to enter my Graduation Giveaway and the Tracking Shadows giveaway!;)
