Review: Demons (Seers #2) by Heather Frost

Happy Friday everyone!

Demons (Seers #2)

by Heather Frost

Published September 11th 2012
by Cedar Fort Books
Format: Hardcover, 432 pages

Goodreads

Kate’s life is far from normal. She can see auras, her boyfriend is immortal, and her powers make her a target. But now that the Demon Lord is hunting her, things are about to go from dangerous to truly deadly. Packed with action, mind-blowing plot twists, and characters you can’t get enough of, this is a fast-paced, heart-pounding read from cover to cover.

My thoughts:

Wow! I still need to recover after that ending!!! Way to let us hanging, Heather!

But I should start with the beginning. And I should tell you that even though Demons is the second book in the series and I highly recommend you read Seers first (which is all full of awesome, as you can see in my review here), you can still jump right into this one. Heather Frost does give us a little info and some details on the background at the beginning of the book, and you'll catch on of what happened in the previous book as the story goes on. My point: of course it will be better if you read the first book too, but you won't be completely in the dark if you don't.

That being said, this second installment in the Seers trilogy was really awesome and even better that the first! You can see some improvements in the story arc, and it's more action packed and fast paced than the first. Pieces of the big puzzle start to fall into place - and wow, what a puzzle they make! So, no second book in the series syndrome here, phew!

You can hardly catch your breath throughout this story. There's always something going on and the suspense is always growing. Kate tries to maintain some sort of normalcy and balance between her human life, the people she loves and the supernatural live - but all the Seers, Guardians and Demons problems make that hard to accomplish. There's danger, secrets, and mysteries everywhere and she doesn't even know who she can trust. Not to mention that she changes a lot and she has some secrets of her own - which is painful and stressful as she feels guilty and only wants to make things right and not to have anyone hurt. But the real problem is that no one is safe anymore - not even her Guardians, who are supposed to be all immortal, badass and invincible. As she tries to make sense of the things happening to her and around her, the constant danger of the Demon Lord keeps everyone on the edge as well. At least she has the support, devotion and love of her Guardian, Patrick, who will do anything - and I do mean, anything - to protect her, and of her friends who are dragged into all the mess as well, even if she wanted them safe and as far away from the danger as possible.

I loved the short glimpses we got from Patrick's POV - I wish there were more of them. Actually, I wish there were more of him, period. The fact that he isn't the all powerful, invincible Guardian we got used to in the previous book makes for some seriously tense, heartbreaking and scary situations. Yes, he's still badass, loving and protective and doing everything in his power to save the day, but he's got his own issues now. Also, he's one of the most selfless, caring main character I've ever met and sometimes I wished he hadn't put everyone else's well being above his own and just take care of himself for once! At least the love between him and Kate seems stronger than ever and holds them together:

Kate’s presence in my life had been unexpected. Life-altering. Wonderful. Heart-rending. Something about her gave me a new sense of purpose—a second chance at happiness.

Their relationship isn't perfect, but it' s the best they can have at the moment:

Our relationship was beautiful, albeit unique. He was two hundred and thirty, and I was eighteen. He was immortal, and I wasn’t. He’d been born in the greenest spot on Earth, and I lived in a desert. But we fit together perfectly, despite our differences. True, I knew we’d run into problems—it was inevitable, considering everything. But for now, things were great. We didn’t think too far into the future, which was fine by me.

We learn so much more about the characters, about the Seers, Guardians, Demons and their world! Things that you would have never guessed and that make the story so much more unique and fascinating. There's also a new cast of characters that make everything more interesting and entertaining. I love Lee and Toni and the new Guardians, they are very supportive and their help means a lot in deadly situations, but they're also lots of fun and true best friends, despite the circumstances.

One of the things I really like about this series is that Heather Frost's writing style is smooth and natural. It has an authentic, flowing quality to it and it grabs you from the first page and compels you to read on, until you finish the book. And despite all the things you find out in this story, everything comes into place easily and at the right moment, so you never feel lost or overwhelmed. It makes everything seem so real! You don't feel like you're reading a book, but like you're actually watching someone's life from the sidelines. Someone who is very close to Kate, because you can actually feel everything she feels: her inner pain and struggles, you can share her thoughts and emotions and by the end, you just want to hug her and tell her everything is going to be ok.

And speaking of Kate, she really grows in this story; she becomes stronger and more mature and determined with every new challenge she has to deal with. She goes through a lot, but she keeps fighting, even though her current situation seems to be too dangerous and impossible to get out of. Yes, she does her share of mistakes, but at the end of the day, that only makes her more likeable and easy to relate to.

I refused to dissolve into tears, and I knew they were only seconds away if I continued to feel and think. I needed to be strong. Even if I was losing hope as rapidly as the others, I couldn’t let it show. I needed to be the positive one. The believing one. Patrick needed that. He needed me.

They are each other's rock; their love and commitment are so incredible and heart-melting! When the situation becomes something of life and death and there's only one way to go, they still have each other to count on. I really felt for them.

But... Even though the story was very well balanced, the characters likeable and kickass and the plot full of action and twists, I didn't really connect with the entire story the way I would have liked to. It may be because the series I read right before this one was still somewhere in the back of my mind (yes, I know it's wrong to make comparisons and such, but the events and the characters there were too mind blowing to forget in a few hours), or maybe I wasn't in the right mood... I don't know, but something didn't click.

Anyway, there's a lot of potential to this story and Heather Frost is so young and incredibly talented, so I'll definitely read the next book as soon as it comes out. Did I mention the killer (umm... literally) cliffhanger at the end? Yup, I need to see where that one is going to lead us.

Bottom line: Demons is a great follow up to Seers: the same compelling writing style, but more tension, action, twists and turns, kickbutt characters, secrets, mystery, romance, drama, heartbreak and a killer ending that promise a mind blowing, emotional ending! You have to give it a try, especially if you like action packed YA Paranormal Romances!:)

Demons by Heather Frost - Blog Tour: Character Interview & Giveaway

Hi guys!

Today I have a special treat for you. I got the chance to sit down and chat with Patrick, one of my favorite lead characters I met last year. He's the kind of character who speaks more through his actions, so I was very excited to ask him a few questions and to see what he has to say and to find out more about him.

Patrick is the love interest in Seers by Heather Frost (my glowing review). Now that the sequel is coming out, knowing so much more about him is going to be very helpful. You'll see, he's very sweet and charming and it's impossible not to love him!;)

Deea: Hi Patrick! Thanks for taking the time to answer my questions!

Patrick: Thank you, for inviting me.

Deea: Tell us a bit about yourself and how did you become a Guardian.

Patrick: Well, I was born in 1780, in Ireland—Wexford County. I had one younger brother, and a great love for painting. I was pressured into joining the United Irishmen when I was eighteen, and was consequently shot and killed by a British soldier on June 4, 1798. That’s when I chose to become a Guardian. The choice wasn’t an easy one, but it was really the only option open to me. I’d promised to protect my younger brother, Sean, and becoming a Guardian was the only way I could really fulfill that promise.

I left Ireland soon after, and have never returned. So far, I’ve spent most of my immortal existence in Europe, working solo to hunt down the Demons that prey on humans. That kept me extremely busy during both the World Wars, and I found a fair amount of Seers during that time. It was soon after the second World War ended that I made my way to America. In New York, I got my first real partner, Toni Alverez, and we’ve been together ever since. We’re currently living in New Mexico.

D: What’s the best part about being a Guardian? What about the most difficult part?

P: The best part? Well, I love watching societies and technologies progress over time. It’s remarkable, how rapidly humankind progresses. But the absolute best part is Kate. If I hadn’t become a Guardian, I never would have met her. The most difficult part is the separation from my family, and old friends. They’re in Heaven, and that’s a place I’ll never be able to go.

D: When you’re not in school or taking care of your Guardian responsibilities, what do you do for fun? Do you have any hobbies?

P: I love to read, just about anything. I especially enjoy studying up on ancient cultures, because I will occasionally come into contact with extremely old Guardians. It makes for some interesting conversations. I can’t recall even half of the amazing stories I’ve heard in the past. Stories that never make it into history books.

I’m also developing a love of photography, and Kate keeps prompting me to begin painting again. I just don’t know if I’m quite ready for that, though. Too many memories. But maybe someday.

But on any given day you’ll find me with Kate, or watching TV with Toni. He’s absolutely obsessed with catching me up on all the greatest sitcoms, and the newest  top shows.

D: What did you think about Kate when you saw her for the first time?

P: I was first struck with how pretty she was. Her pictures hadn’t done her justice. The main thing I remember about that first encounter, though, was the overwhelming sense that she was like me. When I saw her face, looked into her eyes . . . I don’t know, I just felt like we had a common history. After all, death had played a large part in getting us both to where we currently are. I’m a Guardian, she’s a Seer. We’d both lost our parents, we’d both found ourselves in new and strange worlds, but we were both trying to make the best of what life had given us. It was then that I firmly resolved to helping her out. I wanted to help her any way I could, because I could relate to her pain, and I wanted to lessen it in any way possible.

D: Can you describe Kate in three words?

P: Brilliant. Self-sacrificing. Compassionate.

D: What was one of your favorite moments with Kate?

P: The day in the cemetery, where I was finally able to tell her everything about Guardians, Demons, and Seers. It was a quiet moment, and for really the first time she became completely relaxed around me. I don’t know if she feels the same way, (she’d gone through a lot that day, and then I dumped a heap of life-altering information on her,) but I believe that was a very peaceful moment. It felt like we were the only ones in the world.

D: If you could change anything from your past, what would that be?

P: I honestly don’t like to dwell on regrets. I have them, obviously, but the past is unchangeable. Choices define us, and in the end I wouldn’t want to change anything that would have kept me from meeting Kate.

D: Thank you!

P: Thank you for your time, and questions.

*swoon* See what I mean?

Seers by Heather Frost Blog Tour: Author Interview & Giveaway

Hey guys!

A few weeks ago I had the pleasure of reading Seers by Heather Frost, a super awesome debut novel and a perfect summer read: sweet, light, fun, original, quick... One of those books you finish in one sitting and puts a big smile on your face. You can read my 5 stars review shortly, but first, I want to share with you my interview with Heather, who is a super sweet and talented young author.

So, please welcome Heather Frost at Deea's Journal today and stay tuned for a giveaway at the end:

Deea: Tell us a bit about yourself.

Heather Frost: I'm a 21 year old book fanatic. I absolutely love music; I love to listen to it, I love to play it, and I love to sing it (even though I'm not that good.) I'm an English major, and I'm the oldest daughter in a family of twelve. I think What's Up Doc starring Barbara Streisand and Ryan O'Neil is just about as funny as it gets, and brownies are heavenly. I love rainy days, and pictures of ruined castles.

D: Who inspired you as a writer?

HF: Too many people to name. Author J.K. Rowling is high on the list, though. She really helped me see where a book could take you; the characters you could meet, the places you could visit. I was enchanted by her writing, and I've since discovered that the written word is one of the most powerful things in existence.

D: Where did the ideas for this book originate?

HF: It was the summer of 2010. I wanted to write a story about immortals, but I wanted my story to be unique. So I brainstormed for a couple months, finally deciding that the afterlife would be a great subject to explore. During those two months of brainstorming I'd thought of some cool character traits and several scenarios that would be fun to stick in a story. All of this came together one day, and the plot for Seers just fell into my head. It was complete inspiration.

D: Can you share a bit about Seers’ world? Which was the most challenging aspect to write about?

HF: The world introduced in Seers is unique, despite some common paranormal ideas it carries. I mean, it's got auras, guardians angels (for the record, they don't appreciate the “angel” part) and demons—none of which are foreign concepts. But the main differences between my world and those created by other authors stem from a choice that all honorable people face when they die. Because, in my world, death isn't the end. It's more like a fork in the road, actually. After your heart stops beating you can choose to go on to heaven, or you can become an immortal Guardian and return to earth to defend humanity from the Demons—corrupt souls that didn't qualify for heaven. Guardians especially look out for Seers—humans who live through a close encounter with death, coming away with the ability to discern between humans and immortals. It gets pretty wild, and coming up with all the rules was really fun for me.
It seems kinda wrong, but the most challenging part for me wasn't writing about the fantastical, but rather the mundane. I'm much more comfortable writing in the medieval fantasy genre, so writing a novel in the modern setting was entirely new to me. I prefer writing about fictional kingdoms and trusty horses. In writing Seers, it took me a while to get into the swing of things.

D: I love all your characters! They’re all so well crafted and they all have something relatable, yet special about them. Are they based upon people you know in your real life?

HF: I'm glad to hear you liked them! These characters are so real to me—during the writing process they became completely alive. Sometimes I'd find myself typing out a reply, and I'd just have to laugh at what came out.  My characters surprised me often with just how much personality they possessed. I can't say that my main characters are based on anyone I know, though. A few of my minor characters are based off of real people in my life, but for the most part I'd have to say that my characters are completely themselves.

D: Which character did you enjoy writing the most?

HF: I'd have to say … Lee. She's just so loyal and good; outrageous and funny. She was a total blast to work with.
(D: I bet she was! She's so sweet and funny, the kind of girl you would like to have as a bff in real life too!:D)

D: Could you give us the short, Twitter-like description of your book to share it with our bffs?

HF: Kate Bennett is about to be thrown into a war between immortals, with enemies only she can discern. Both sides are seeking her help. The Guardians are asking nicely; the Demons aren't as polite.

D: So what’s next for you? (Please tell me there’s going to be a sequel to Seers; that ending was killer!)
